ここでは私、Teacher Janeの簡単な自己紹介と、

・私が英語を教えるきっかけになったこと
・なぜ英語を教えるのか？

ということについて語っていきたいと思います！

Teacher Janeのプロフィール

私はカナダのバンクーバーで生まれ育ちました。
英語を教えてもう30年以上になります。

私が生まれ育った1980年代・90年代は日本などのアジアの国々は、私たちのような欧米人からすると未知の国でした。

そんな未知でそして魅力にあふれた国に、私は子供のころからたくさんの興味を持っており惹かれていたのです。

私が19歳の頃、札幌にCo-op留学に3か月間行く機会があり、そこで初めて日本という憧れの国に足を踏み入れました。

(バンクーバーと札幌は姉妹都市で交換留学などが行われていました。)

そこでの暮らしは私の人生に大きな影響を及ぼすことになります。

私は日本の文化や、日本人の透き通った純粋な心にほれ込んでしまったのです。

そんな日本で過ごす3か月という期間はご想像のとおり本当にあっという間でした。

と当時の大学の先生に頼み込むほどまでに日本に滞在したい気持ちが強くなってしまったのです。

そして結果として3か月にとどまらず、なんと3年も滞在することになりました笑

その3年の間、私は大学の非常勤講師として英語を教えることになるのですが、その時に感じた日本人の好奇心には本当に驚かされました。

1991年の日本は今より異文化交流がなく、私はいわゆる「外人」でした。
そんな海外から来た私に対する物珍しさだけでなく、英語の授業に対する真剣さは目から鱗だったのを覚えています。

ETCの設立

そのときの経験をもとに、2001年にバンクーバーでEnglish Traning Center（ETC)を開業し、今では、日本人だけでなく中国・韓国・スペイン・インド・フィリピンなどの世界中から生徒が訪れる教室となりました。

私たちはベテランの教師陣と、練り上げられたカリキュラムを持っており、質の高い教育とプロフェッショナルな授業にフォーカスしています。

そのため、私たちの授業は全て個人か少人数のクラスしかありません。

それに私は日本の知識と日本でのバックグラウンドを活かして授業をするため、違和感なく授業を進めるのが得意です。

2020年以降、ご存じのとおり世界は大きく変わりました。
それと同時にETCは大きく進化しています。

これまでは一部の限られた人にしか英語を教えることができませんでしたが、今では全世界の人、そしてあなたにも私の授業を届けられるようになりました。

そして私はこの新たなチャンスを心から歓迎しています。

「私が持っている英語の知識を全て教える事」

これが私の情熱であり、エネルギーの源泉です。

「英語を共通言語として世界中の人がコミュニケーションできるようになり、文化的にも心から理解し合えるようになること」

これが私と、そしてETCが持つたった一つのゴールです。

これを見ているあなたには、適切に、正しい英語を学んでほしい。(カタカナなしで笑)

そして、海外の人と理解し合い、「完璧に」コミュニケーションできるスキルを身に付けてほしい。

一緒に山を乗り越えていきましょう！

知ってます。

日本人にとって、英語を習得することはとてもハードです。

それは英語と日本語が、発音から文法と何から何まで対極に位置している言語だからです。

「私が英語を完ぺきに教えること、そしてあなたが英語を完ぺきに習得すること」

これを実現するためには、お互いに大きな大きな山を登る必要があります。

あなただけでなく私も。

でも私は諦めずにチャレンジし続けます。

だから、あなたにも同じような意気込みを持ってほしいです！

決してあなたの手を離さないので、ちょっとずつ少しずつ、一緒に頂上を目指しましょう！

そしてあなたが私の手を必要としなくなった時、

「Break the ice」をして気軽に、そして自信を持って英語でコミュニケーションを取りましょう！

私の教育スタイルと教育哲学は、かつて日本で学んだものとほとんど変わりません。

正直に言ってしまうと、

・ハードワーク
・厳しさ
・意志の強さ

を必要とします。

私の両親が70年代にソ連で生まれ育ったという背景もあり、毎週土曜の朝はロシアの学校に通っていたのですがその時にロシア語も学びました。

クラスの友達が遊んでいる間も、私はロシア語を学ぶために教科書にかじりついていました。

日本に行ったときも同じです。

学ぶチャンスは全てつかむつもりで過ごしていました。

日本語で会話の練習ができる友達を作り、寅さんのビデオを見て、赤川次郎の小説を読み、そして日本語のスピーチコンテストに参加し、そうして日本語を習得していきました。

新しい言葉を学び、それを復習する。
そしてさらにそれらの言葉を日常生活でも使っていく。

それが言語を習得することのカギであり、ETCの教育の根底をなしています。

No pain, No gain！

痛みなくして得るものなし。それもまた重要な精神です。

今の情報社会では、「5分で簡単！」というような偽物が溢れています。

そんなことはあり得ません。

さっき言ったように山を登る必要があるし、

時には痛みを感じることもあると思います。

しかし、そうでないと本物のスキルを身に付けることはできないと考えています。

ただ、そこに私はちょっとだけ私流のエッセンスを加えました。

それは
「Have fun！！」
の精神です。

ただ厳しく学んでいくだけではつらいものとなっています。

しっかりと教育していくことができれば、つらくても楽しくてもいいわけです。

それなら、楽しく学べる方がいいですよね！！

一緒に楽しみながら山を登っていきましょう！

Jane Solovyov grew up in Vancouver, BC Canada and always had a curiosity for Asia because in the 80’s and 90’s Asia seemed to be a far away land.
In 1991, there was an opportunity to study and work in Sapporo, Japan on a 3month co-op program but that program turned into 3 years!

I fell in love with Kanji, Japanese culture and the pure heart of Japanese people.
I was a “Gaijin” in 1991 in Sapporo, Hokkaido. The genuine curiosity that Japanese people had and the love I felt around me would open my eyes to not only another far away culture but the love for teaching English where I taught part time while going to University.

With that, I was on a path to teach English and since then in 2001 I finally had enough courage to open ETC English Training Centre in downtown, Vancouver.  
Over the years English Training Centre has been a revolving door of students coming from all over and every part of the world, it was truly our United Nations!
I had a team of teachers including myself developing and perfecting ETC curriculum.
We always focused on quality education, professional teaching and small group class learning. 

In Teacher Jane’s classes with Japanese learners, I brought my Japanese knowledge and background to fill in the cultural differences between Japanese language/culture to North American language/culture.
Day in and day out I saw students coming and going, saying “Hello” and “Matta Ne” and this went on until 2020 when the world came to a standstill and English Training classes pivoted to technology.
This pivot has made it possible for me to teach every Japanese person on a bigger platform and I am taking this new opportunity with open arms and heart. 

Teaching everything I know about learning a language is my passion. My only goal is for everyone to speak English as a one common, united language to communicate and culturally understand each other.
I want every Japanese person to learn English properly (without Katakana) and to understand our differences as well as similarities and to perfect the skill in communicating with everyone around.
I only wish for all my Japanese students to open their mind,  creativity and have the confidence to communicate with any individual speaking English. 

I know English language/culture is exactly the opposite of Japanese language/culture so, we have a mountain to climb but I will never give up trying. I hope all of you will have the same eagerness as I have to learn Japanese, and with this desire, to climb the English Mountain together, side by side, step by step, holding hands to reach the top.
And, when we get to the top for all of you, without holding my hand, being able to “break the ice” and communicate in English with ease and confidence. That’s my goal and the goal of English Training classes. 

My Teaching style and philosophy is the same as my Japanese teachers used with me. Hard work, strictness, determination and I added on my own to also “have FUN!” 

Reviewing and learning new words and to use them in daily conversation is key, this is the way we teach at ETC. 
My parents came from the old Soviet Union in the 70’s and growing up I saw their frustration with English but I also had the ability to learn Russian. Growing up, I went to Russian school every Saturday mornings while my friends were having fun, my nose was to the books to read and write Russian.

The same went for me in Japan. Every chance I got, I tried to make friends, watch Toro san’s videos and read Akagawa Jiro novels to improve my Japanese language skills. I entered Japanese speaking contests and studied everything my Japanese teachers gave me to learn more and more. This is the way to learn any language and this is the way I teach!
